Graduates Celebrate — Pass High School Entrance Exams
Three years ago, 28 small children and three brave teachers crammed into a small, American Chamber of Commerce Foundation room to initiate the FHM pilot. The kids sang, “Come, young citizens of the world. We are one.” On March 23, 2007, 26 confident, accomplished young people graduated, proving how the FHM core value of Bayanihan (a Filipino word meaning shared community effort) can work for children! Ahead are good high schools, including Don Bosco, Adamson, and the University of Santo Tomas lab school.

What Connections Is FHM Making Possible?

  • Students see possibilities on a trip to General Electric’s call center.
  • Children from the Malolos school experience cotton candy and balloons twisted into animal shapes at Cargill’s family Christmas party.
  • A Pakistani-born Navitaire employee congratulates a young cricketer and fills a family’s need for transportation to high school.

“That was too fast! How did he do that?” Julius teaches the mathematical “Rule of Four” during a visit to a private school and college.

  Celebrate Teachers!
An international visitor was impressed with the Food for Hungry Minds’ staff. Remembering how important teachers were to her own life, she made a gift to them. How did they invest it? The Philippine team went on an educational outing to World War II site Corregidor!

Kids Write About FHM Difference

  • There have been many changes in my life. Now when I fall down, I say to myself, “I will not give up".
  • Last trimester, I did not do my best. Teacher told me he believes in me. Now, I did my best and I am in the top 10. I continue to do my best. I want to help my family. My dream is to be a doctor someday. I want to help the poor and sick people. I am so lucky because I have faithful teachers and sponsors.
  • I learned in FHM that we can help each other. We can do it in experiments, in small reading and math groups, and our Bayanihan.
  • I learned to eat vegetables, to write horror stories, to read long books, and how to use my imagination in writing.
  • I’ve learned to forgive my classmates when they make mistakes.
  • When I wasn't here yet, I was afraid of the future. But I know I cannot be afraid of it, because step by step I am moving toward my dream.

Coming Soon: Twin Cities FHM Initiative
Thanks to support from our new partner company, OCI, FHM is identifying initiatives to pilot in the Twin Cities. The challenges in the U.S. are different, the goal is the same: bridge divides to engage kids living in struggling communities and support them to succeed academically and serve in life. Stay tuned—and thank you for being with us!
